The NZ Freedom
Camping Guide
Everything you actually need to know to freedom camp in New Zealand without getting fined. Rules, self-contained requirements, the best spots on both islands, and what we wish someone had told us before we started.
Everything you need to camp free in NZ
Built from lived experience on the road across both islands. Not copied from a website. Not guesswork. The things we had to learn the hard way so you do not have to.
What freedom camping actually means in NZ, how it works region by region, and the assumptions that get people fined. The $400 fine is real. This section helps you avoid it.
The green sticker requirement, what self-contained actually means, converted vans vs motorhomes, renting vs buying, and what to check before you commit to a vehicle.
Queenstown, Wanaka, Mt Cook, Lake Tekapo, West Coast, Abel Tasman, The Catlins, Christchurch, Dunedin. Specific sites with costs, facilities, rules, and our honest notes.
Northland, Coromandel, Rotorua, Taupo, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and more. The best free spots on the North Island with what to expect and insider tips.
Everything you actually need in your van including the things most people forget. Power, toilet, kitchen, safety, navigation, comfort. Categorised and ready to print.
A realistic, relaxed 10 day route from Christchurch to Queenstown covering the highlights without rushing. Shows exactly how to combine freedom camping with the South Island.
Is the $295 DOC Annual Pass worth it? When does NZMCA membership make sense? We do the actual maths so you know whether to buy either before you go.
CamperMate, Rankers, the NZMCA app, and how to use each one to find legal spots, read real time reviews, and plan your nights before you drive.
The mistakes we have seen catch people out repeatedly. From assuming what worked in one town works in the next, to arriving too late for the good spots.
Important: All vehicles used for freedom camping must display the new green self-contained sticker (updated in late 2024). The old blue sticker is no longer valid. If you are renting, always check the windscreen before you accept the vehicle. This guide explains exactly what to look for.
